Soon, the greatest story on ice (Not the hockey one) will unfold on the silver screen.
Earlier today, Crunchyroll announced that they will join forces with Fathom Events to give Yuri!! On ICE a one-day theatrical run in the United States. On October 13, more than 95 theaters across the country will screen the series in its entirety. The screening will include a video message from series producer, as well as a short “hello” from Victor Nikiforov’s pet poodle Makkachin.
Tickets to the event are now on sale via Fathom Events’ website.
Yuri!!! on Ice is an original title, which was created by manga author Mitsurou Kubo (Moteki) and director Sayo Yamamoto (Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, Michiko & Hatchin). Yamamoto directed the work at studio MAPPA, and took charge of series composition for the project. Tadashi Hiramatsu (Parasyte -the maxim-) provided character designs, as the team of Taku Matsushiba and Taro Umebayashi scored the soundtrack.
The series aired in the Fall 2016 broadcast season. Crunchyroll streamed Yuri!!! On ICE as it aired in Japan. They describe the show as:
Yuri Katsuki carried the hope of all Japan on his shoulders in the Figure Skating Grand Prix, but suffered a crushing defeat in the finals. He returned to his hometown in Kyushu and hid away in his family’s home, half wanting to continue skating and half wanting to retire. That was when the five-time consecutive world champion, Viktor Nikiforov, suddenly showed up with his teammate, Yuri Plisetsky, a young skater starting to surpass his seniors. And so the two Yuris and the Russian champion Viktor set out to compete in a Grand Prix like none the world has ever seen!
A new film, Yuri!!! On ICE the Movie: Ice Adolescence (Yuri!!! On ICE Gekijōban: Ice Adolescence), is currently in the works and on track for a 2019 premiere.
