Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World? – Episode 1

Kai and his friends looking at his phone

What’s it about? The Great War of Five Races nearly devastated the entire world until the Prophet Sid won the war for humanity.  The Prophet sealed the other four races in a black pyramid and entrusted a group of humans from the Urza Federation to make sure that no monsters break out. Kai takes his job seriously and is baffled when his world changes into a new reality where the monsters have won and no one remembers him.

I wish the characters were more interesting, because the premise here has a lot of potential.  Everyone feels like the standard archetypes typically found in magic and sci-fi stories, which does sort of feel intentional because there seems to be a disconnect with Kai’s realities.  There’s clearly something off about the world Kai lives in and the fact that he’s the only one that remembers a different world could be the key to solving the mysterious changes happening around him.

Unfortunately, Kai isn’t interesting either. He’s the usual bland hero who has a deep sense of duty and wants to protect the entire world.  He doesn’t have much personality that defines him above his generic trope.  In addition, Kai’s friends are extremely boring and only serve to provide exposition about the history of their world.

Angel chained up
Well… that’s one way to introduce a main character.

While there should be some curiosity built up in regards to the angel that’s chained up, it all becomes moot the moment the camera zooms in on her breasts and body.  She’s definitely important to the plot, but it’s unfortunate that her significance is narrowed to sexualizing her body rather than highlighting who she is as a main character.

The other women characters are thankfully not subjected to the same amount of fan service, but there’s no guarantee that’ll remain the same throughout the series.  What the series lacks in interesting characters, it’ll absolutely have to make up with the plot.  Will this be a story about alternate timelines, or is everything being run by a secret organization that’s entrapped its users in a video game?  Either way, the worldbuilding has a real chance of developing into something interesting and while it’s no Wistoria in terms of visuals, there’s still a heartbeat here.

monster attacking Kai
At least the monsters look cool.

If I sound unconfident it’s because the entire episode feels like a mixed bag.  Unlike other premieres this season, this show definitely has a coherent narrative and at least has plot points worth discussing.  It isn’t awful, but it’s not great either.  This’ll probably interest fantasy and sci-fi fans, but I can’t see myself sticking around for more. It’s definitely backlog season for many of us, which makes me happy that I’ll finally have some time to play catch up with shows I’ve been meaning to watch.
