Earlier today, GKIDS took to Twitter to announce that Studio Ghibli’s library will begin streaming on HBO Max. The studio’s library will hit the digital service in Spring 2020.
The deal marks the first time that Ghibli’s films will stream on any platform. The launch lineup will include the following:
- My Neighbor Totoro
- Spirited Away
- Kiki’s Delivery Service
- Princess Mononoke
- Howl’s Moving Castle
- Ponyo
- Castle in the Sky
- The Tale of the Princess Kaguya

The Wind Rises will launch on the platform in 2020.
GKIDS has been releasing Studio Ghibli’s films in theaters since 2011, and home video since 2014. Under their stewardship, Ocean Waves and Only Yesterday made their North American debut in 2016. Since 2017, GKIDS has partnered with Fathom Events to host Studio Ghibli Fest: an annual series of theatrical screenings for Studio Ghibli’s films.
Studio Ghibli Fest 2019 is ongoing, with Spirited Away slated to hit theaters across North America on October 27, 28, and 30.
