Well, we might see this classic make its grand debut?
On September 7, anime studio Gaina announced that they are picking up work on the Uru in Blue (Aoki Uru). The studio plans to launch the film in theaters worldwide in 2022.
Hiroyuki Yamaga (Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise) will direct the project and produce, while Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (FLCL, Evangelion) provides character designs.
In addition to the production news, Gaina announced that art by director Hiroyuki Yamaga will be featured on the doors at the Shinjuan in Kyoto’s Daitokuji Temple Complex.

Uru In Blue is a long-running, yet incomplete project that began at Gainax in 1992. Hideaki Anno (Evangelion, Nadia – The Secret of Blue Water
The project was ultimately shelved in 1993. Several reboots of the project have been attempted, with Gainax trying to restart in 1998, 2001, 2013, and 2014.
In 2017, Yamaga stated that the film had officially entered production.
For the 2014 project, a prequel short, titled Overture was announced. This would be released in 2015, ahead of the 2018 premiere for the main film. Ultimately, though, neither project was ever released.
The new project is listed as a “restart” on Gaina’s website, making this the seventh attempt to produce Uru in Blue.
