Kyoto Animation Header Earlier today, the Kyoto Prefectural Police unveiled the identities of ten victims who passed away in the blaze that destroyed Kyoto Animation’s No.1 studio. According to the authorities, they were given consent to release the names of victims by their families, and that funeral services for all ten have concluded.

The Kyoto Police noted that they are refraining from revealing the remaining twenty-five names due to requests from the victims’ families, turnaround times for DNA identification, and other circumstances.

Futoshi Nishiya was 37. He worked as a character designer, key animator, and animation director on forty-seven titles, including:

On July 17, fire broke out at Kyoto Animation’s No. 1 studio. Thirty-four passed away in the blaze, and more than thirty were injured.

Police determined the cause of the fire to be arson, and have arrested a suspect in the action. According to NHK, the police apprehended a male who was seen spraying an accelerant “like gasoline” both in and around the studio. The man’s license indicates that he is in his 40s.

According to NHK, the suspect was saying “Go die” as he ignited the fuel.

Kyoto Animation was established in 1981 by former Mushi Pro staff members. Since its founding, the studio has produced numerous prominent anime titles, including The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad, K-On!, Free!, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, and Sound! Euphonium.
