Earlier today, news broke that Junji Ito’s Tomie manga will get a western live-action adaptation. The series is slated to run on new digital platform Quibi, which will specialize in short-form content.
Tomie will be directed by Alexandre Aja (Piranha 3D, The Hills Have Eyes), with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Walking Dead, Aquaman) writing the show’s scripts. Hiroki Shirota will serve as a producer for the project. All three confirmed crew members will share Executive Producer credits.
Quibi is set to launch in Spring 2020. The service aims to produce “quick bites of captivating entertainment, created for mobile by the best talent, designed to fit perfectly into any moment of your day,” per the marketing materials.
Junji Ito’s Tomie manga ran from 1987 through 2000. The title launched in Monthly Halloween, and led to Ito winning the Kaoru Umezu award. The series later moved to Nemuki magazine.
To date, the title has seen eight live-action films, as well as a 1999 TV drama, titled Tomie: Another Face.
Viz Media holds the rights to the Tomie manga, which they describe as:
Murdered again and again, one girl always comes back for more… Tomie Kawakami is a femme fatale with long black hair and a beauty mark just under her left eye. She can seduce nearly any man, and drive them to murder as well, even though the victim is often Tomie herself. While one lover seeks to keep her for himself, another grows terrified of the immortal succubus. But soon they realize no matter how many times they kill her, the world will never be free of Tomie.
