Earlier today, the official Free! anime website announced that the upcoming “all-new” Free! movie was delayed. Due to “various circumstances,” the film was pushed back from its planned Summer 2020 premiere. A new release date will be announced at a later time, when it has been determined.
According to the post, “the entire staff, including the directors, have been working hard to meet [fan] expectations” on the project.
Feature film Free! Road to the World opened on July 5. The film retold the events of Free! -Dive to the Future, while adding in “new episode.” The film was intended to be a bridge for the upcoming Free! movie.
The core staff from Free! -Dive to the Future returned to work on the film. Eisaku Kawanami (Free! -Take Your Marks-, Free! The Movie -Timeless Medley-) directed the project at Kyoto Animation and Animation DO, with Futoshi Nishiya (Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club, A Silent Voice) providing character designs. Masahiro Yokotani (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, All Out!!) penned the script.
Free! -Dive to the Future- aired in the Summer 2018 broadcast season.
Crunchyroll streamed Free! -Dive to the Future- on their digital platform, while Funimation produced a SimulDub. Funimation describes the show as:
