Wow. It’s been a long time since we talked about this one!
Earlier today, Fafner fans flocked to the Kanagawa Prefectural Hall for the “Fafner in the Azure BEYOND Special Event – Truth ~” fan event. During the presentation, a new trailer and visual were shown off for Fafner in the Azure: The Beyond (Sokyu no Fafner THE BEYOND), as well as details on the show’s theme songs and broadcast formats.
We break the details down below.
Trailer
The 30-second promo flies through a series of action cuts, as a choral piece sets the mood. Character dialogue drives the main story beats.
Key Visual
The image features Soshi Minashiro standing alone in a ruined village, as the sun rises behind him. The ghostly image of Kazuki Makabe can be seen in the background.
Theme Songs
Angela will return to perform Fafner in the Azure: Beyond‘s theme song.
Broadcast Format
Fafner in the Azure: The Beyond will be a twelve-episode series. All episodes of the show will receive a theatrical run, with 4-D screenings being planned for the title. The series will hit Japanese theaters and TV networks in 2019.
Takashi Noto, who served as chief director on both seasons of Fafner in the Azure: Exodus, as well as feature film Fafner in the Azure: Heaven and Earth, will return to the director’s chair at Xebec. Tow Ubukata (Psycho-Pass 2, Ghost in the Shell: Arise), who wrote the screenplay for Fafner: Heaven and Earth and handled series composition on Fafner in the Azure: Exodus, will write the script.
Gou Nakanishi (Ajin, Knights of Sidonia) will executive produce.
The first two seasons of Fafner in the Azure were originally released in North America by Geneon Entertainment. Funimation rescued the license after Geneon’s exit from the western market, and released both the show and sequel film Fafner: Dead Aggressor: Heaven and Earth on home video. Crunchyroll streamed Fafner Exodus as a simulcast in 2015.
