While it might have a funny title, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is actually a bit infamous within the anime community.
The first time that this series was exposed to American audiences on a wide scale was in 2005 when Cartoon Network aired the 76 episode series over a period of two years. Following that, it was released in the US back in 2007 by the now defunct Illumitoon. It didn’t take long however before the DVD series was canned right in the middle and the company folded. Fast forward to 2012 and another anime company, S’more Entertainment, decided to license the title and release the entire series over two box sets. Fast forward again and a fourth company is taking a chance on the absurd comedy which has been repeatedly described as “best ingested in small doses”.
At their panel at Otakon today, Discotek announced that they have licensed the series and will be releasing it as one big box set! No details were available regarding when the set will be released but it was promised that the box set will contain both English and Japanese language tracks.
MyAnimeList describes the story as:
In a futuristic world, the Maruhage Empire is a militant organization out to steal everyone’s hair, and thus their freedom. But a brave man with an afro of gold and nose hairs of steel stands up against their tyranny. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, trained in the ways of hair, rescues a teenager named Beauty from the grunts of the Maruhage Empire. Together, they start on a journey to defeat Emperor Tsuru Tsurulina IV. As Bo-bobo meets new friends and battles foes along the way, so too does he begin his quest to save all the hairs of the world!
