How long should a romance anime or manga be?

Anime loves to keep will they/won’t they going in romantic subplots, but when should a story centered around romance end?

  • What’s the ideal length for a romance manga? Is it different for manga?
  • What series nailed it? What kept going way too long?
  • What does a long-running love story need to work?
